October 2026 Tournament Rules Changelog
Hey Riftbounders,
Vriss here with a new Tournament Rules Update! Today’s rules go into effect with the Radiance Pre-Rift on October 16, 2026.
While this update may look large, it mostly involves cleaning up small mistakes and adding clarity for judges where it was lacking. I’d like to give a huge shoutout to the Riftbound judge community for all the amazing feedback that helped inform this update, especially @benediktwerner for collating a ton of information and sending it our way. Riftbound thrives when we can work with players and judges to provide the best Organized Play experience possible.
For a detailed breakdown of all the changes, see the bulleted list below. For a link to the full Tournament Rules document, look here:
While we’ve come a long way developing and improving the Tournament Rules, we see a need to share more about our philosophy and thought processes behind this document. We’re working on a new companion document for the Tournament Rules which fully breaks down the philosophy and intent behind each rule, especially for the judge perspective. More details to come soon!
Changing Gameplay Decisions
Before letting you dive into the nitty gritty, I want to elaborate on Riftbound’s Gameplay Decision policy (509. in the Tournament Rules).
The Gameplay Decisions policy exists to give players some flexibility when making decisions (we are not aiming for an equivalent of chess’ touch-move), but it is not meant to allow players to take back errors once their opponent is required to call information to their attention.
For example:
- Player A moves their 3 Might unit to a battlefield and passes focus.
- Player B indicates their 2 Might unit at that battlefield is now at 4 Might due to their legend, Wuju Bladesman.
- Player A can no longer change their decision to move to that battlefield and pass focus.
High Organized Play Level (OPL) Riftbound events have the highest level of competitive integrity, valuing player’s skills and abilities to evaluate the game and make strategically correct tactical decisions. At high OPL, we never want it to feel like you need to play the game for your opponent or get punished for your opponent’s mistakes.
(At casual OPL, allowing an opponent to take back a mistake like this is not required, but it is encouraged for sportsmanship and learning.)
